Pencil on Paper, 10x16
Joel R. Edwards, a Texas-born, Waco-raised artist has been creating art since he was a child. After selling his first drawings of Spiderman at age 14, it seemed clear that art could be a lifetime pursuit. He attended the Dallas Art Institute after high school, but he is largely self-taught from reading books, studying other artists' work, and from personal experience.
Joel is primarily interested in the effects of light on a subject and strives to convey a sense of the mood of the subject that inspired him. He uses graphite, watercolors, and oil paint, and describes himself as a “loose realist,” leaving out excessive detail in an effort to connect with the viewer on an emotional level. Joel is influenced by many of the old masters and other painters including John Singer Sargent, Andrew Wyeth, and Winslow Homer as well as contemporary artists.
Joel’s work has won awards in national competitions such as the National Oil & Acrylic Painters Society 2014 Fall Exhibition. He was a finalist in the International ARC Salon 2012-2013. His work has been shown in numerous other shows in the central Texas area. Some of Joel’s notable portraits include Christian music great Kurt Kaiser, as seen on his latest album cover, Legacy. Additionally, Joel’s portrait of Dr. Gordon Teal hangs in the Teal Residential College at Baylor University. His creative work has been used for book and magazine covers as well as granite memorials across the United States. He is a member of the Oil Painters of America and his paintings are included in collections throughout Texas and around the nation.
